Google should stand up for privacy rights: Ontario Privacy Commissioner

| July 11, 2008
Google should appeal a U.S. court order to disclose YouTube users' information to Viacom, wrote Ontario Privacy and Information Commissioner Ann Cavoukian in an open letter to Google. Cavoukian notes that the court order issued last week overlooks the U.S. Video Privacy Protection Act which prohibits video tape service providers from giving out information about subscribers' viewing histories of video tapes or similar audio visual material. Cavoukian also emphasized that the compromise effort to anonymize users' data fails to adequately protect privacy rights as users may be re-identified by linking the data to public available databases of personal information.
