US groups call for "Do Not Track" list

| November 01, 2007

A number of consumer and privacy groups in the USA are calling for stronger protections against unwanted tracking of their online activities by online marketers.  In a brief to the Federal Trade Commission, the groups recommend creation of a "Do Not Track" list, through which online consumers could block such unwanted tracking.  At the same time, the Centre for Digital Democracy and US Public Interest Research Group filed a detailed submission with the FTC calling for an investigation of online marketing practices and the prohibition of tracking without the individual's affirmative consent. The filings were made in advance of the FTC's Town Hall meetings on "Ehavioral Advertising: Tracking, Targeting and Technology" on Nov.1-2, 2007.
