Host liability for online defamation at stake in lawsuits
| July 27, 2006
Two Canadian website hosters are seeking support for their defence against defamation lawsuits. Jon Newton, operator of p2pnet.net, and Michael Pilling, operator of openpolitics.ca, are both being sued for allegedly defamatory comments made by others on their websites. Unlike the U.S.A., Canada does not have statutory limits on the liability of ISPs and web hosters for comments made by others via their sites. A public roundtable on the issue and a benefit concert for the defendants will be held in Toronto on Aug.5th.
