Email campaign nets fraud
| October 25, 2005
A lobby group seeking to prevent a municipal bylaw banning cosmetic use of pesticides has discovered the importance of online authentication the hard way. Propertyrights.ca invites people to send a message to Ottawa City Council opposing the bylaw by simply inserting their email address, then clicking on "Send". The site makes no efforts to confirm signatories. One councillor received a message from himself, as well as from an outspoken supporter of the bill. Many other messages have been sent from fake or non-working addresses.
