New Copyright Bill: Consumers Come Last

Industry Minister Jim Prentice today introduced into the House of Commons an Act to Amend the Copyright Act that imported the worst aspects of the American DMCA while leaving consumers digitally locked on the outside looking in. Highlights: good ISP liability regime, long overdue time and format-shifting exceptions. Lowlights: those consumer exceptions - indeed, almost all user rights under copyright law, including fair dealing - are trumped by digital locks. We now know the Conservative vision of copyright, and it's bleak: digital distributors are king, and Canadian consumers come last.

Massive Consumer Coalition Demands Copyright Policies that Put Canadians First

A massive coalition of Canada's leading consumer advocates have today released an open letter calling on the Canadian government to embrace copyright policies that put Canada's interests first. Open Source Group Releases Copyright White Paper

The Canadian Software Innovation Alliance has released a copyright White Paper and open letter to Canada's Ministers responsible for copyright policy calling for balanced copyright laws that support, and do not undermine, the open source business model. The CSIA's position is indicative of a growing consensus among business groups, creator groups and consumer advocates that the course of Canadian copyright policy must steer away from the American Digital Millennium Copyright model.

Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement draws fire

A multilateral agreement-in-the-making between Canada, the US and Europe would turn border guards into copyright police, charging them with checking laptops, iPods and other digital devices for material that infringes copyright. ISPs would be forced to identify alleged infringers upon request, without a court order. The proposed agreement was leaked last Friday, leading to public outcry.
